The month of August 2010 marks the 14th year of KUMBIRA 2010, another showcase of talents and skills together with the celebration of Cagayan de Oro’s annual Fiesta in honor of its Patron, Saint Augustine.

KUMBIRA 2010 is one of the anticipated major events in participation for the Cagayan de Oro’s annual fiesta. It is a culinary Show and live competitions that will exhibit Food and Beverage Competitions, Cooking Seminars and demonstrations initiated by experts from the field of food industry and Hotel and Restaurant.

KUMBIRA is headed by Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (COHARA) every year in participation with the annual fiesta. With the City Government Resolution No. 7314 – 2005, the third week of August is declared as “KUMBIRA WEEK”. COHARA has continued this event every year and 2010 will feature its continued success on its 14th year.

KUMBIRA 2010 with its theme “Local Flavors for Global Competitiveness” has attracted culinary professionals, students, experts, housewives and enthusiasts from different regions in Mindanao and even cities from Visayas and Luzon. Scheduled on August 18- 20, 2010 at the Atrium Limketkai Mall, KUMBIRA will present 11 competitions for the Professional Category and 12 for Student Category which includes “Chef Wars” , a regional competition of which the winners will be the representatives of Mindanao for the Chef Wars national Competition to be held in Manila on September 10 -11, 2010. This competition is part of the “National Food Showdown”, a production of TV food chefs, a subsidiary of ABS – CBN Broadcasting Corporation.

The judges for this year’s showdown will consist of culinary personalities of prominent industries from Manila, Cebu, Davao and other cities. Cash prizes, trophies and certificates for the event are sponsored by loyal sponsors including the Department of Tourism.

The success of last year’s showdown was participated by 195 entries from 33 schools and 82 entries with 14 establishments competed in 22 events. Winners from Professional Category were Bigby’s café (1st), Pryce Plaza (2nd) and Café Laguna (3rd) while for the student’s category were Tagoloan Community College (1st), St. Michael’s College – Iligan (2nd) and Christ the King College – Gingoog (3rd).

COHARA aims to encourage students and professional alike to showcase their talents and creativity at the same time promoting friendly competitions among COHARA member establishments and other participants.
